Sunday Sailing is a members event and will run every other week, giving everyone the opportunity to have some fun, meet fellow members and get out on the water.

There will be games and activities for Juniors in the morning, safety boat cover and the usual calendar of Sunday afternoon racing.

(Please note this isn’t a training event and Juniors must be supervised by a parent / carer at all times.)

Volunteers are needed to make this all happen, attached is a link to the OSC Volunteering Sheet. Safety boat helm must hold PB1&2 and have had their annual refresher. You don't need any experience for any of the other duties, so please put your name down and have a go.

This year we're heading to Coniston for our annual Lake District weekend. It should be a fantastic weekend. We'll be guests of Coniston Sailing Club and will have access to their facilities for the weekend including a well stocked bar and Saturday night BBQ. Camping will be at Coniston Hall camping site next to the club, we will have a separate field reserved just for us.

There will be an informal gathering in the Club Bar on Friday night and on Saturday there will be a BBQ.

Safety boat cover will be provided and you can securely store your boat at the Sailing Club for the weekend.

There's no need to go sailing if you don't fancy it. The campsite has direct access to the lake, Coniston village is a short walk away and the rest of the Lake District is on your doorstep.

    How much is it?

For the BBQ on Saturday night and use of the Coniston Sailing Club for the weekend, it's just:

    • £15 per adult
    • £9 for Juniors (6-18)
    • Free for 5s and under.
    • There's also a £10 fee for every boat you're taking.

Please pay via the Otley Sailing Club website when you book.

    For camping please pay in cash at the site, the charges are as follows per night;

    • Adults £10
    • Vehicles £2
    • Children £5 (aged 3 to 15 years)
    • Motorhomes (including two people) £20
    • Canoes £1
    • Boats £2 (although if you're leaving your boat at Coniston Sailing Club this charge won't apply).

Please note they don't have electric hook-ups on site.

On arrival a £10 cash deposit is required for a barrier card to access the site. This is refunded on departure when the barrier card is returned. Unfortunately the campsite cannot take card payments. The nearest FREE cash machine is in Hills Garage in Coniston (the Post Office)

    Boats

Please take your own boats, we won't be taking Club boats for the weekend.

Junior Week is back for 2019; it will be a non-residential week for 8 to 16 year olds running over 5 days from Monday 5th August until Friday 9th August 2019.

The aim of Junior Week is to provide an opportunity for children to have fun, enjoy sailing and related activities with other young people. The week is suitable for complete beginners and experienced sailors (RYA Level 4 and beyond) alike.

Children can arrive from 8am, but must be at the Club by 9am every day. The afternoon activities will finish at 4.30pm, children can be collected after this time. All children must be collected by 6pm.

Food and snacks are not included, please send a packed lunch and suitable snacks for your child.

    The cost of Junior Week is;

    ·         OSC Members - £125

    ·         Non-members - £175

On Wednesday evening from 5pm, we will be having a BBQ. Juniors, parents and volunteers are all invited to this event, there’s no additional charge for this, please let us know if you’ll be attending so we can cater for the right number.

Whilst every effort is made to offer your child progression through the RYA syllabus, certification is not the primary focus.

In addition to enjoyment and learning new skills, safety is of paramount importance during Otley Sailing Club courses.  Water sports can be hazardous by their nature and participants, parents or guardians must accept that there are risks and the inevitable bumps and scrapes which happen during the thrills and spills of fast moving activities. To manage the risks so far as we are able, Otley sailing club has a ‘safe system of work’:

    •   We used RYA qualified Instructors.
    •  We provide a range of safety equipment for participant’s comfort and safety.
    •   We teach to RYA recommendations and guidelines.
    •  We have robust management and safety systems which have been inspected by approved bodies such as the RYA.
    •    We will modify/cancel an activity if we feel that there are unmanageable risks.
    •   All Instructors on the course have had a DBS / Criminal Records Bureau Check and we  have dedicated on shore and off shore team of helpers. We have first aiders on site at all times.

    Please note that:-

    ·         All children must have a wet suit.

    ·         Sailing boots or neoprene beach shoes need to be worn (or trainers that you don't mind getting wet).  Crocs or similar are not suitable as they tend to be too slippy and fall off the kids feet too easily.

    ·         All children must have a RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Log Book (This can be purchased from the club).

    ·         Children must attend all 5 days as partial attendance affects group dynamics.

    ·         Children are not allowed mobile phones, tablets, laptops or other electronic items during Junior Week.

    ·         Otley Sailing Club retains the right to adjust the programme or cancel the event if not enough volunteers are forthcoming to help run Junior Week 2019.

This Dinghy Sailing course is designed to follow the RYA "Start Sailing" and "Basic Skills" (Levels 1 & 2) Adult syllabus.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to sail a dinghy in any direction and rig and launch in moderate weather conditions. The RYA Level 2 certificate is an Internationally recognised sailing qualification and an indication that the holder has a basic level of understanding and practical competency.

The syllabus covers practical sessions such as rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres, ropework and capsize recovery. Background theory includes subjects such as "rules of the road", basic meteorology, clothing and equipment and emergency equipment.

Tuition is given by trained and qualified RYA dinghy instructors with an emphasis on safety and fun! There will be Safety Powerboats on the water at all times to ensure your safety afloat.

The course will be run over 2 Thursday evenings and 2 weekends to give you maximum time to fulfil the requirements of the syllabus. It is really important that you can attend ALL of the practical and theory sessions as it is not guaranteed we can help you catch up with things missed.

      Autumn Course

      Theory evenings 7.30 - 9pm

      29 Aug and 5 Sept

      Practical weekends 9 - 4

Otley Sailing Club prides itself in truly offering "Sailing for All" and as such, we welcome disabled sailors on our sail training courses. We have trained and experienced volunteers who are used to dealing with disabilities of all kinds so virtually anyone can enjoy the thrill of sailing!

    * Junior Crew Trophy (top placed junior crew sailor)

Barts Bash racing will start at 11.00AM on Sunday 15th September. Please remember that you need to register on the Barts Bash website by clicking here. There will be a voluntary £5 entry for the race - all proceeds will go to the Bart's foundation.

If you don't have a boat you can hire (via the website) one of the 5 club Picos or be oh so daring and hire one of the new club Hartleys!

For those who wish to make a weekend of it the club is open for camping on the Saturday evening. We'll even run a night race if there's any wind!

BACKGROUND (from the event website: http://www.bartsbash.com/post/14-15-september-2019): Bart’s Bash is a global sailing race taking place at hundreds of venues, with thousands of sailors in hundreds of different classes of boat around the world. This incredible event works on the assumption that sailing venues host their races at weekends and we invite them to unite in one colossal global sailing event. Put simply it’s the day the world goes sailing!

It's a day the sailing community remembers Andrew 'Bart' Simpson, a double Olympic medallist who tragically lost his life whilst training for the America's cup in 2013. Bart’s Bash is an annual fundraising and participation campaign promoted by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation (ASSF). Each individual event is organised by a venue which is the organising authority for all activities at their site.

If you have any further questions just drop me an email.

    Best wishes,
