Trophies Awarded at Buoyancy Day

Thanks to everyone who came along to Buoyancy Day – a great way to kick off the season. We handed out trophies from last year’s racing and other club events, and it was brilliant to see so many sailors recognised for their efforts.

If you didnt make it along to Buoyancy Day your trophies can be collected from the clubhouse over the next couple of weeks. Any trouble finding yours just get in touch with Rob (sailing@otley-sailingclub.co.uk)

We are saddened and shocked to share the news that Robert Espindola, a long serving Committee Member, Membership Secretary and Director of the club has passed away suddenly whilst sailing in France.

Our sincere condolences go to Robert's family and friends.

Norman Stephens - Funeral details

Very sad to share the news that one of our founding members, Norman Stephens passed away on 29th June. Our thoughts are with Marlene and the rest of his family and friends.

As a club, we will be planning a special event to celebrate Norman's life.

Norman's funeral will be held on Wednesday 27th July, 11.30am at Lawnswood Crematorium. Norman's family have asked that donation are made to Otley Sailing Club in Norman's memory.

Faith Lunch - cancelled

Given the high levels of infection at the moment, the Committee has made the decision to cancel the usual Faith Lunch held after the Hangover Cup race.

The Hangover Cup race will still go ahead as planned.

There will be 2 way traffic lights on the main carriageway, and whilst the works are undertaken we will be unable to access the track to the clubhouse.

Reopening 29th March 2021

We are delighted to say that, if all goes to plan, the club will be open for members from Monday 29th March. The committee have been working hard to obtain clarification on what we can do in conjunction with the RYA. As we know things can potentially change at short notice but I am sure you will be pleased to learn that the committee is planning positively. The government is due to release further guidance on 22 March and any changes will be communicated.

The club has a duty of care to all its members and we need to ensure that we take appropriate precautions to try to keep our club Covid secure. Please note link to RYA “road map”

So, what can you do at the club from 29 March:-

Recreational use of the water is allowed in line with guidelines – rule of 6 or two households.

Racing – the club is currently working with the RYA to see how racing can go forward

Only the entrance and disabled toilet can be accessed initially. Please do not use this facility for changing. Hand sanitisers are placed both outside and inside the facility. All clubhouse facilities will be professionally cleaned before use by members and will continue to be cleaned on a regular basis.

Buoyancy Tests (dinghies)

Could we remind members that dinghies used at OSC must have an annual buoyancy test before going on the water. As we are not able to carry out formal checks until later in the season, could you ensure that you make an honest assessment of your boat’s seaworthiness. The main check is for the airtightness or buoyancy tanks and bags.

For boats with built in buoyancy tanks, check around seams, joints and mast foot for cracks or gaps, missing or damaged bungs etc. On water check can be carried out by filling the boat to the brim with water, waiting for 20 mins and then checking tanks for leaks. For boats with buoyancy bags: check that all bags are undamaged, airtight and their securing straps are firmly attached to the boat. Ensure that rigging is in good condition.

If in doubt, do not go out or ask for advice.

Insurance Reminder

All dinghies, canoes, kayaks, windsurfers and paddle board used or stored at the club must have third party insurance. To confirm you are insured, please log into your account on the club website, navigate to your profile page, click ‘edit’ and tick the box that has been added.

Finally, as restrictions ease, further communication will be sent out regarding the use of club facilities and club activities and events.

See the Upcoming Events section for details and register now for Barts Bash 2020. Maximum 20 boats. Lunch available. Get to the club by 1pm for the big Barts Bash race that starts at 2pm. This is a 1 hour race with silverware for lots of different categories including juniors.

It is with great sadness that we must announce the passing of our friend and OSC Lifetime Member, Eric Lee.

Eric was a club member for over 20 years, and many of you will have known him through his work as a Sailing and Powerboat Instructor. He was also a dedicated Sailfree Volunteer as well as a Trustee and Director of the Club. We will greatly miss his dry sense of humour and presence at the club. He was a true gentleman who made a positive difference to the lives of many people.

Eric's funeral will take place on Friday 22nd November, 12.20pm, at Lawnswood Crematorium. Club members are invited to attend.

No flowers please, donations will be taken for the RNLI.

Please be aware that there is a large wasp nest underneath the diving board on the island. It is best to stay away from this area until we have dealt with the situation.

Please advise Juniors particularly not to go near the diving board either from the island or from the water.

Sailing Sundays start this Weekend!

Hi all

Just a reminder that the first Sailing Sunday of the season will be this weekend. The safety boat will be out from 10am. There will be activities for Juniors in the morning, general social sailing and the usual calendar of Sunday racing.

The Sunday Sailing sessions will then run every other Sunday until the end of the season.

We need volunteers to make these work. If you can, please sign up and get involved. The volunteering sheet is available in the Members section of the website.

Buoyancy day - a great start to the season

Thank you to all who volunteered to organise and run Buoyancy Day, and all the members who came down. The clubhouse was packed. Prizes were awarded, food was eaten, boats were tested, and a great race was run in challenging conditions. Well done to the 2 crews who stayed dry and everyone else - good capsize drill practice!

We're finalists for RYA Yacht & Yachting Club of the Year!

Otley Sailing Club has been chosen as the RYA North East Region finalist for the RYA Yacht and Yachting Club of the Year. We have also been awarded the ‘Inclusivity and Open to all’ Award for all of our work introducing sailing to the disabled community. Congratulations to everyone involved, this is an amazing achievement.

There are eleven finalists for Club of the Year, and the winning Club is voted for by the public. We need your vote and as many others as possible, please forward onto family, friends, neighbours, works colleagues – literally everyone you know, as every vote counts. Let’s make Otley RYA Club of the Year and bring that prize home to Yorkshire!

RYA CEO Visit 10th May 2016

We were asked a while ago if we would host an evening for the RYA Chief Executive, Sarah Treseder to come and visit us as she would be in the area for a couple of days. We said yes, so on Tuesday evening Sarah came for an informal chat to some of our members. We also had along for the evening Steve Gibbon, who is the Chairman for the RYA North East region and Sam Usher, the Regional Development Officer. They learned all about what we do and how we do it! Sarah then very kindly started the evenings racing and finished everyone over the line.

Flood Repairs Working Party

Flood Repairs Working Party

The club grounds sustained a lot of damage on the second flood, where the river level reached a record high and filled the lake up to the flag pole.

There is a lot of damage to the pontoons and dinghy park and car park

Work to do:

· Road to repair - holes filling

· Car park to re-surface complete

· New Pico dinghy park to repair

· gravel to retrieve from shore line - dredging

· pontoons to repair

· Water pump to refurbish

A lot of work to do before the new season starts

I plan to have Sunday as working days from next Sunday onwards until complete

If anyone can join in and help please come down 9:30 - 4:0 ish.

If you have not checked your dinghy and dinghy park area for damage then I do suggest you go down and check, as boats were found in fields and in trees (no kidding)

Stella, it’s been a pleasure!

Stella Murdoch, 86 has recently announced she is hanging up her lifejacket and retiring from sailing. She has been a fiercely competitive racer over many years and has turned out in all weathers – at times beating her much younger counterparts. She has regularly taken away various trophies at our annual prize giving event held in March each year.

Stella joined Otley Sailing Club in the late 1970’s and has served time on the committee as well as holding the office of Commodore between 2002-2004.

She has been an inspiration to anyone who knew her at the club and put a lot of the younger members to shame!

We would like to wish Stella all the very best and hope that we will still see her at our many social events throughout the year. She will certainly be sorely missed on the start line.

Double Gold for Otley Sailing Club Junior Powerboaters!

Weeks of practice paid off for the youngsters of Otley Sailing Club on Saturday 30^th May when they won double Gold medals at the Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire Regional Final of the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship. Otley Sailing Club sent a team of 6 youngsters to compete.

The Honda Championship is divided into two age groups; 8-12 years and 13-16 years. Each competitor completes a slalom course driving a powerful RIB (rigid inflatable boat) and the fastest time with no penalties wins in each section. The winners qualify for the National Finals at the Southampton Boat Show in September.

30 young powerboaters from clubs around the region took part in the competition which was hosted by Welton Waters Adventure Centre near Hull. The youngsters from Otley Sailing Club showed the benefit of training as they left many of their fellow competitors in their wake, achieving some fast times even in the blustery, breezy conditions. Some fast times were set and 1st to 4th places were only separated by 4 seconds!

First place in the junior class for 8-12 year olds went to Otley Sailing Club and this group was won by 12 year old Oliver Scott-Caro from Ilkley. Oliver attends Ilkley Grammar School and his time was 1min 35secs.

At 1min 26secs, the best time of the day was set by 14 year old Ben Rawson from Rawdon, winning the 13-16 year old group. Ben attends Benton Park School in Rawdon and began sailing at Otley Sailing Club a year ago.

Otley Sailing Club swept the board in the 13-16 year old class, winning all the top three slots. Rebecca Clarke from Ilkley was second (Guiseley School), with Hannah Davison from Silsden third (Woodhouse Grove School).

All children must be accompanied by an adult. This is run as part of the RYA Push The Boat Out

Otley Sailing Club is now a Registered Charity

Good news was received today from our good friend Caroline Thompson-Hayes

Otley Sailing Club now has a Registered Charity Number 1,160,253

Caroline has worked hard over a long year plus to put all the required information forward to the charities commission resulting in the news today

The first step was to change the club to a limited company then we were able to apply to the charities commission.

Work putting the documents together came from Ian White with information from David Pollard, Nigel Hulley, Matt Thomas, Norman Stephens, Chris Moran, Peter Fox, Eric Lee

We have now a list of Directors in charge of the clubs affairs who oversee the management committee to keep things all legal

I hope you join me in thanking all concerned for the work put in on behalf of Otley Sailing club to make this happen

The Charity is aimed at providing sailing to ALL and with this great news we can all benefit and see the club grow into the future

Building Work Now Mostly Complete

The building works are now substantially complete. The club now has improved changing facilities, a wet room for Sailfree users and a new path to the club house.

To All members,

Help will be needed in the club house to prepare the store room and changing rooms for the builders to start work. The new wet room and upgrade to the flooring in male and female changing rooms require the whole area being cleared with benches removed roof space clearing and store room moving into the genny house.

A list of all jobs will be on the whiteboard in the club.

Please come and help with the work load on Wednesday 1st Oct & Thursday 2nd - 9th & 16th from 7:30 - 9:30 approximately

Building work is likely to start on improving the club facilities on the 13 October for external works with the internals starting on the 27th. No sailing during the week but the club will be open at the weekend.

Our very own Norman Stephens carried the Queen's Baton into Leeds Civic Hall last night to conclude the Queen's Baton Relay event in Leeds. Norman said it had been a wonderful day and he had been inspired to see the next generation of Leeds sporting young people at events throughout the city. Well Done Norman. Your 60 years of sporting commitment is an inspiration for all of us.

Sailing experiences for the public

17th of May 2014 saw our first invitation to the Otley Show, we were invited by the organisers to sail some of our boats on the first lake of the estate. Our group of volunteers brought the boats 2 comet trios, 2 Laser Picos, 2 Access boats and the Pioneer rescue boat, all had to me made ready and trailered to the lake then re-rigged, all we launched in to the lake and moored overnight ready for the next day.

we made a 16ft x 8ft jetty out to the water so the boats could sail up and let people on and off the boats without getting their feet wet, a spectacular construction that stood up to the challenge of up to 6 people at one time.

The marquee was erected and kitted out with tables and chairs, a changing room and then fencing to usher our guests to the right area. New banners were made by Becky Davison. Becky also had bunting and flyers made, telling the public all about our sailing club and what we do. Christine Hodgson created the official disclaimer documents for signing people in.

All ready to go - the show opened and what a fantastic day was had by all sun heat and wind made for excellent sailing, people from all ages had a go, I had a number of small children with mums and dads sailing with me - the children were sometimes a little apprehensive but by the time it was ready to return they were loving the experience and wanting to go back for more. Everyone enjoyed the rides and were very polite saying "thank you we really enjoyed the sail", another comment was " I have learned more about sailing in the last 5 minutes than I ever knew, it was great"

I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who contributed no matter how big or small to making this event such a success, initial figures are at over 130 people took up the offer of a sailing experience on the day we will update the total later.

Looking forward to next year if we are invited, I have booked the weather already.

Donation of £2000 from the Building and Engineering Services Association

We were pleased to accept a donation of £2000 from B&ES- http://www.b-es.org/ (Building and Engineering Services Association) today at the club.

The money was raised in January at the B&ES Yorkshire Regional Ball held at Cedar Court Bradford.

B&ES have kindly sponsored Sailfree at Otley for over 8 years.

The cheque was presented to our Commodore, Paul Karran by Daniel Ball the Yorkshire Regional Chair accompanied by Neil Ashford the Yorkshire Regional Manager.

This generous donation once again enables the club to offer over 1000 sailing sessions a year to people with a range of needs. Our work is only possible by the hard work of all our volunteers and club members.

Otley Sailing Club Progresses towards Charitable Status

Following approval from the club membership last year and legal help from Schofielld Sweeney Solicitors the club is one step closer to becoming a charity. A limited company has been formed which was necessary prior to application for charitable status from the Charity Commission which is the next stage. The club is now a company limited by guarantee.

Inspired Facilities Grant £38,246 from Sport England

The club has been successful in securing a significant grant from Sport England for Sailfree:

The value of the award is £38,246 towards a total project cost of £48,246 for the development of the club house, grounds and other refurbishments.

The developments will make the club more accessible for disabled users.

"The award is fantastic news for the club," said Peter Fox, Otley Sailing Club's RYA Sailability Co-ordinator. "We will be creating better disabled facilities and integrating them into the entire clubhouse. We are already an RYA Sailability "Centre of Excellence" and we plan to build upon our 25 years of experience to make our sailing centre as inclusive as possible."

"I am extremely pleased that Otley Sailing Club is going to benefit from Olympic legacy funding," said local MP, Greg Mulholland. "The award is great news for the inclusivity of the sport of sailing and the improved facilities will build on the club's successful "Sail Free" programme and will maintain the proud history of the Club."

Sport England’s Chair, Nick Bitel, said: “A year on from the Olympics, this National Lottery investment is helping us deliver a lasting sporting legacy in West Yorkshire.”

“With investment now on offer from our Inspired Facilities Fund until 2017, we look forward to supporting many more sports clubs in the region who play such a vital role in grassroots sport.”

"I am delighted to see that Otley Sailing Club has been successful with the Inspired Facilities application," said David Staniforth, Chairman of the RYA Yorkshire and Humberside Region. "These new and refurbished facilities will be great for sailing in the region and will allow many more people to take part in the sport."

The club has been successful in securing a grant of £940 from the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) for the purchase of new sails and clothing for use by disabled people. The club will match the funding with donations from other organsations. The total project expenditure is £1880.00.

Coming soon...Sailing Refresher/Improver training

We will be running a number of evening sailing refresher/improver sessions in May/June.

These sessions will last around one and a half hours and are aimed at adult sailors who wish to refresh their level 2 skills or work towards level 3 or one of the advanced modules such as "Sailing with Spinnakers" or "Seamanship"

There will be a small cost (T.B.A.)

Bart's Bash is coming to Otley Sailing Club - become a World Record Holder!

The Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation is planning a monster sized attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for 'The Largest Sailing Event in the World', which they are calling 'Bart's Bash'!

The idea is to have a mass participation club race across the UK and the whole World. Pretty much every club has a race on Sunday morning, with all kinds of boats taking part and the goal is to get everyone participating together to create one big event race. OSC intends to join the hundreds of clubs taking part. With just their normal sailors racing on the water, the event will generate thousands of Guinness World Record Holders in Andrew 'Bart' Simpson's name. New Shore Line Concreting Work

The Work is all but complete, we had a fantastic turnout to help wheelbarrow the concrete to the new shoreline - this is where the wheelchairs are brought on to, so the sailfree participant's can board the access boats, this should be a great help with the smooth ramp and a bigger frontage.

Thank you to everyone who helped throughout the winter no matter how big or small the contribution every little bit helps.

New Season Powerboat Refresher for all Existing Level 2 Powerboat Drivers

It is a club requirement that all powerboat drivers, including instructors, undertake a brief refresher session each season before commencing any powerboat driving. The refresher session takes about 30 minutes and covers the basic elements of powerboat handling that members will be familiar with from their level 2 course.

Last season over 30 club members completed their refresher and we hope to have a similarly high take-up this year. Refresher sessions will be available from Sunday 30th Mar 2014 onwards and club members wanting an assessment should simply speak to any of our PowerBoat instructors to book a session with them.

Please note that you will not be able to use a club powerboat until you have completed your refresher.

Buoys removed for cleaning, works started to raise pontoon on the island and shoreline works for improved disabled access.
